Casa de la cultura and Cornbread & Tortillas Fundraiser!

You could feel the magic in the air last night, as artists from all around Kentucky converged in support of the wonderful cultural arts organization Casa de la cultura hispana and the new project we are embarking on together--the creation of a multi-disciplinary theatrical work showcasing the cultural connections between Kentucky and Latin American traditions and art forms. The Grupo de danza folklórica demonstrated a traditional dance from Vera Cruz, Brett Ratliff showed some primitive East Kentucky banjo/ballad traditions, Zoey Raven brought some Kentucky fiddling and bass playing, and members of Appalatin added Andean flutes, cajon, and guitar with a Latin flair. Audience response was high when Jorge Luis Ruiz sang the traditional Mexican corrido "El Rey"! The room was full of celebration and appreciation--what better way to learn about each other, and how to live in harmony, than through singing and dancing? We have many more Cornbread & Tortillas events planned, including ongoing dance classes in Appalachian Clogging and Folklórico-Style Mexican Dance, a festival in Lexington, KY, and performances, workshops, and work creation at Appalshop in Whitesburg, KY!
